[Edit]Pianist Ezra Weiss' Persephone is a nine-piece suite based loosely on a tale from Greek mythology. The music ranges from hard bop to menacing ballads, utilizing adventurous harmonies and always having a forward momentum as if it were the soundtrack to a show. Along the way, trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman and altoist Antonio Hart emerge as the key soloists, although it is Weiss' writing that gives this set its own musical personality and purpose. Persephone is an intriguing concept overall that contains some fresh new music.
