[Edit]French-Algerians have been some of the most powerful forces in hip-hop music in France, but heavy censorship has kept them underground in their native country. Faouzi Tarkhani is one of the first Algerian hip-hop artists to release a commercially successful album. Entitled Guerrier Pour la Paix (Warrior for Peace), the Francophone album combines West Coast-style funk-influenced hip-hop with smooth R&B tracks. The sound borrows heavily from American music, but the lyrics, which are a mixture of love and political themes, seem straight from Tarkhani's heart. Slick production wraps it all up into a professional package, making this album likely to make a major impact on the French charts, as well as garnering interest elsewhere.
