Details
[Edit]Before the CD era, this three-LP box set was the definitive single Fats Waller collection. It hits most of the highpoints of the great pianist-vocalist-composer-organist-entertainer's career. Starting with his recording debut in 1922 (the piano solo "Muscle Shoals Blues") and continuing up until a 1943 version of "Honeysuckle Rose" taken from the soundtrack of Stormy Weather, all aspects of Waller's productive career are covered. He is heard on virtuosic piano solos, playing organ, sitting in with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra ("Henderson Stomp"), backing singer Alberta Hunter, jamming with his "Buddies" in 1929, guesting with Ted Lewis and Jack Teagarden, and recording hits with his regular sextet of 1934-42. Although all of this music is now available on CD, the attractive and informative 56-page booklet is a good reason by itself to pick up this box.
