European pianist Florian Ross debuts a dozen originals and one familiar jazz standard in this impressive trio outing with bassist Dietmar Fuhr and drummer Stéphane Huchard. Ross is extremely difficult to pin down as he delves into a moody mini-suite (although the tracks are spread out throughout the CD), opening with the ominous miniature "Puddles: Swim, Pt. 1," incorporating a bit of prepared piano in "Small Pond: Swim, Pt. 2," offering a bit of a tense chase in the turbulent "Big Fish: Swim, Pt. 3" and concluding with the spacious, slightly Oriental-flavored "Pool Boy: Swim, Pt. 4." "Compared to What?" is not to be mistaken with the famous riff tune by Eddie Harris and Les McCann; it is a very lyrical jazz waltz. The sole cover is an intricate, deliberate reworking of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps." This enjoyable release grows in value with repeated hearings.
