Details
[Edit]Frank Zappa released two live albums in succession documenting his tour with the Mothers of Invention incarnation that featured Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (known as Flo & Eddie) getting plenty silly. The first set, Fillmore East: June 1971, included songs left out of the film 200 Motels. The second set, Just Another Band From L.A., was recorded live at the Pauley Pavilion at UCLA in Los Angeles on August 7, 1971. The first side of the original album consisted of the side-long "Billy The Mountain," an elaborate and confusing story that satirizes the rise of the rock opera by settling on rudimentary riffs and an over-the-top theater delivery that would give the players in Waiting For Guffman pause. Side two reinvents two Zappa classics, Absolutely Free's "Call Any Vegetable" and Uncle Meat's "Dog Breath," with Zappa providing guitar solos that further his legend. While Volman and Kaylan take centerstage through the performance, it should be noted that bassist Jim Pons, drummer Aynsley Dunbar, and keyboardists Don Preston and Ian Underwood provide seamless backing throughout.
