Details
[Edit]Anyone hearing Frankie & The Heartstrings without knowing who they were might wonder if they were a lost group from the late '70s that got overshadowed by The Undertones, The Buzzcocks, The Only Ones, and the countless bands that sprung up in The Sex Pistols' wake. Yet their albums carry copyright dates safely into the '00s, and the music by this Sunderland, U.K.–based band does reflect the subtle shades of The Smiths' Johnny Marr and the excited bounce of Suede's Bernard Butler, who produced the set. Delicate guitar lines and energy run throughout songs like "Nothing Our Way," "Invitation," and "She Will Say Goodbye." The quick-paced thrills of "I Still Follow You" and "That Girl, That Scene" eventually lead to the slower rumination of "Losing a Friend," a reflective ballad that's closer to U2's two-chord wanderings. The male-female call and response of "Light That Breaks" shows orchestration that further expands the band's range.
