Details
[Edit]The BBC studio was an ideal setting for a heavy rock outfit like Free. Something about BBC recordings from this era had an added intensity that could never be replicated on official releases. All the recordings on this brilliant two-disc collection were recorded in the span of exactly two years, from July 1968 to July 1970. While numerous rock bands were lost in a haze of acid and flower power, Free had a mightily gritty and focused attack that would come to define rock in the '70s. Of course, “All Right Now” is here in all its spitfire glory, but a number of the other songs are equally potent. In the BBC studio, there was no trickery to dress up a performance. What you get is the unadorned sound of Free’s guitars and drums, plus the iron pipes of Paul Rodgers. His voice was Free's signature, but these songs would be nothing if not for the band’s deep-set grooves. “Woman,” “Ride on a Pony," and “I’ll Be Creepin’” are built like granite yet ineffable funky. Sabbath and Zeppelin may have had more firepower, but it was Free that personified the raw unembellished essence of blues-rock.
