From Good Homes' Take Enough Home is a bit of a sad document. It captures the band's last ever performance — announced as such — in August of 1999. After a long career playing together since high school, through several major-label discs and genuine homegrown success, the band decided to turn it in. Just knowing that lends a melancholy air to the music on the disc, which is a fairly representative slice of their accessible blend of acoustic guitar, folky vocals, and saxophone (not entirely unlike their contemporaries in Dave Matthews Band, Agents of Good Roots, and Hootie & the Blowfish). The music is upbeat and cheery, with sometimes a little too simplistic message of positivity on songs like "Celebrate." It's a nice sentiment and fine to sing about, but not the stuff of deep intellectual penetration. The fact that this is the band's final show lends the music a solemnity, purpose, and meaning that it might not ordinarily be imbued with.
