[Edit]The taster for the Hark at Her album was an interesting mix of songs and styles, apparently meant to show Patrick Fitzgerald's ear for a variety of different musics if nothing else. Though compared to the sheer epic-yet-human surge of Kitchens of Distinction, Fruit is a calmer affair, but one with high points. "What Is Fruit?" itself, the one track which turned up on the album, is pretty much a manifesto, describing the nature of the one-man band and embracing the joy of life over a light rock/dance fusion. "Gene K." — as in Gene Kelly — is a brisk little romp, a bit like country flamenco if such a thing existed. The remaining two songs are covers: a quirky, rough take on the Gershwin classic "The Man I Love," here invested with a consciously gay outlook, and a bizarre version of "Climb Every Mountain" featuring "the Shriek of Arabia" on vocals that sound like they belong in a Monty Python sketch.
