You don’t need to have seen Funny People to enjoy this great soundtrack. Opening with the hushed elegance of Paul McCartney’s “Great Day” sets the tone for a collection of beautiful and (mostly) melancholic tunes that build on a pensive but warm mood with mellower musings by Ringo Starr, Warren Zevon, James Taylor, John Lennon and others. The acoustic stomp and catchy melody of “Wires” by Coconut Records is a standout track (not to mention that it’s pretty cool how the song surfaced here, since cast member Jason Schwartzman is also in the band). Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation’s “All The King’s Horses” from 2005’s Mighty ReArranger is as gorgeous as anything from his 2007 album with Alison Krauss, Raising Sand. Lead actor Adam Sandler even contributes with a humble cover the the Beatles’ “Real Love.” Bonus cuts include Sandler also taking on Ringo Starr’s “Photograph” and Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.”
