You Know Who You Are

On the Winter Park, Florida based band's Myspace, there's a slot for a definition of what they are. A few words sum up everything very succinctly, "Gasoline Heart is rock & roll." No argument from the get-go on that, as Louis Defabrizio's edgy vocals rise over Joey Bradshaw's jangly guitar fire on "Move Along," and Jeff Irizarry's insistent drum intro ushers in the throbbing and energetic "Cheers (Here's to Life)." The more contemplative, mid-tempo anthem "All the Way" shows off a cooler side of Defabrizio's voice — for about a minute, before the guitar explosion kicks in. Then that sensitivity moves to the forefront on the retro-soul, John Mayer vibing "When Big Girls Grow Small," which offers a cool balance to the harder rock approach of the other tracks. When they ease further into simmering soul territory on "Meet Me in Georgia," it's clear that we're dealing with strong and versatile singer/songwriters. Said Myspace page also includes the quote, "don't let the truth get in the way of a good story." But these tight rockers on their way to indie success are a bit disingenuous when they say they're a "well dried up," the subtitle of "Steam." With grit, attitude, edge and a few soft spaces in between, Gasoline Heart's You Know Who You Are is mining a lot of fertile soil.
