Details
[Edit]Taking a sharp left turn from his solo releases, Ron Franklin re-launches himself as the leader of a hopped-up, lo-fi rock trio on Gasoline Silver’s self-titled debut album. On this album, Franklin’s material and vocal style bear a distinct resemblance to Blonde On Blonde-era Dylan, accented with dashes of ‘70s glam rock and neo-rockabilly. With a teasing edge, he fires off volleys of brain-twisting imagery in tracks like “Indianapolis,” “Electro Shock Dubliner Blues” and “Miss Cape Canaveral,” backed by shivery synthesizers and tinny drum machine beats. Especially stinging is “It’s All Over But the Cryin,’” a distorted heartbreak rant swaddled in guitar fuzz and playful hostility. The loping minimalist groove of “To Electricity” allows Franklin to display his poetic sensibility in a more subdued setting. He presents “The Wild Farewell” and “Ron Franklin’s Dream” as thoughtful acoustic pieces, but except for those numbers Franklin finds liberation by ditching his folkie clothes and barreling through this set of smart, finely tweaked garage rock with a vengeance.
