It took George Strait nearly 20 years to release an eponymous album, and he marks the occasion with a collection of gentle, folk-based tearjerkers. Windows and rain are the recurring images here as Strait describes with simple detail stories of separation and pain in “If You Can Do Anything Else” and “If It’s Gonna Rain.” Whereas male country singers often turn to self-loathing and resentment in their love songs, Strait always plays the victim as one humble and faithful. Witness the opening lines of “Lookin’ Out My Window Through the Pain”: “I watched from my window as she slipped from the house / Once again she's leaving, but Lord, she's not to blame / This morning a memory phoned her and he's a habit she can't break / So 'til she returns, I'll wait for her, looking out my window through the pain.” To keep the album from becoming a total heartbreaker, Strait mixes it up with the rowdily amusing “Home Improvement” and “Don’t Make Me Come Over There and Love You.” Capping things off is “You’re Stronger Than Me,” a Hank Cochran tune with a classic chorus and a Bakersfield swing befitting Buck Owens.
