Without the massively successful "The Riddle" on the track list, The Best of Gigi D'Agostino isn't a one-stop shop for the producer's biggest floor-fillers, but most his other weird, wacky, and wobbly hits are here. That means "L'Amour Toujours," "Bla Bla Bla," and "Another Way" are amongst its highlights, making for an Italo-pop-disco trifecta of proven floor-fillers, but D'Agostino's strange wit shines on the lesser-known cuts, like when his humming of an old Ultravox song through Auto-Tune generates a tropical house success dubbed "Hymn." Then there's his love of cabaret and classical music, both of which get smashed into the elaborate and elegant "Amorelettronico." "Endis," on the other hand, is raw EDM and video game noises playing catch with electro, while "La Ninna Nanna" splits the difference, coming off as a Celine Dion song gleefully toppling into the arms of a Skrillex track. When anything goes, "good taste" tends to jump out the window, but Gigi's pop is cheeky enough to be considered a garish joy, or joke, or best of all, a little of both. If ZYX's Best Of isn't perfect, it's as splendid as the producer himself, making it an attractive introduction to this great Italo-disco illusionist.
