A three-man crew comprising Zae Da Blacksmith, Timothy Brindle, and Stephen the Levite, The Collective has been around for a minute (individually) but truly impress on its first group album. Sporting strong lyricism, solid chemistry, and seriously neck-bending production that blends true-school fundamentals with more modern beatmaking techniques, The Collective has got everything it takes to blow up (at least in the underground), sounding a lot more polished and on-point than most newcomers. The elephant in the room is the members' hardcore Christian faith, which dominates their lyrics and will likely do two things: endear them to the Christian rap community (which is bigger and more passionate than most would imagine) and alienate them from the rest of the hip-hop universe, (which is a shame, since these guys are really dope). Religious beliefs aside, The Collective makes excellent music that will hopefully get the mainstream props it deserves. Don't miss "Ergonomics," "Bad Words," and "4 My Ninjas."
