[Edit]This is distinguished by its all-star Italian cast, its unusual combination of two trumpets backed by rhythm, and by the quintet being led by a bassist. Although the recording is dedicated to Chet Baker, the tunes were written by Tommaso and are not associated in any way with the trumpeter. Still, Baker's spirit hovers nearby, as the unassuming, immaculately performed pieces recall Baker's ability to understate without loss of focus. Flavio Boltro and Paolo Fresu are two of Italy's leading jazz trumpeters. Each has marked himself on dozens of records, but has somehow inexcusably escaped the notice of much of the international jazz community. This is a good introduction to both; they show a sparse, delicate side that never competes, but merely sports a tasteful, delicious shadow. Pianist Danilo Rea, drummer Roberto Gatto, and, of course, bassist Tommaso are three of Italy's best.
