A strong and intriguing debut, No Stranger Not at All presents Gisburg's beautiful, versatile voice in settings ranging from wordless vocalizations to spoken word battery. The Austrian singer/composer steps into a wealth of styles over just ten tracks, presenting a healthy musical curiosity and talent. The title track is a jazz cymbal ride softened by Jeff O'Malley's subtle narration as Gisburg contributes breathy voice work. "Imaginary Movielandscape 1" is the first of her music for imaginary movies, with an erhu solo that carves out a theme for the voice and bass to move through, harmonizing. "Jawohl" is a particularly cutting piece: an mbira accompanies voice, juxtaposing high, whispery notes with words drawn from the text of Primo Levi's Survival in Auschwitz, which are delivered in emphatic bursts of spoken German. "Opening" and "Fruits" are based around experiments in non-repetition, while other tracks draw influences from the tango and Indonesian gamelan.
