The Caliph’s Tea Party is a remix album of Gonjasufi's breakout, A Sufi and a Killer. Featuring Mark Pritchard, Bibio, Broadcast & the Focus Group, Bear in Heaven, and Shlohmo, among others, the list of contributors is impressive. Their aesthetic fits in with the left-field hip-hop styled by former producers (Mainframe, the Gaslamp Killer, and Flying Lotus) as they chop the dreadlocked L.A. yoga instructor/froggy vocalist's a cappella parts to the point that they're left even more detached and disoriented — which is saying a lot, considering the state of the originals. These psychedelic beats rarely stick to the 4/4 formula, but as undanceable as they are, they are innovative, and it’s interesting to see just how whacked out these remix artists can be with proper motivation. Of course, The Caliph’s Tea Party doesn't match up to the source material, but it manages to push the envelope and take the visions of Gonjasufi to unique new places.
