Gov’t Mule are the ultimate jam band. This concert, recorded at Atlanta’s Roxy on New Year’s Eve 1999-2000, is their ultimate live album. Unreleased for ten years, Mulennium is a marathon-length concert featuring bassist Allen Woody, who died eight months later, and a number of covers that prove Gov’t Mule could deconstruct anyone’s music and make it their own. King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man,” the Who’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused” are turned inside out by the able guitar theatrics of guitarist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts, who never met a drum he couldn’t pummel into submission. Blues legend Little Milton joins the band for six tunes, including an extra-special “It Hurts Me Too.” Audley Freed, who had just joined the Black Crowes, throws his guitar at a thirteen-minute version of Hendrix’s “Power of Soul,” the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” and Alice Cooper’s “Is It My Body?” The band cleans things up with Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.”
