To explain African Jazz to people, compare it to King Oliver's band — not only a seminal band, but crammed full of musicians who were to become superstars in their own right. Besides Kalle (or Kale) there was Rochereau, Nico, Manu Dibango, Essous and Malapet. Formed in 1953 by Joseph Kabasele (Kale), African Jazz was hugely influential throughout Africa (Bembeya Jazz has acknowledged a debt to Kale). They were still going strong in 1962, just a year before Nico and Rochereau left to form their own band. Now, the music...imagine a Cuban charanga without the violins or piano and let an electric guitar play the piano parts — now have the singers sing in a very sweet tonal language so that all the melodies are changed — now you're close to African Jazz — just lovely. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, Rovi
