Grant McLennan’s fatal heart attack in 2006 ended the Go-Betweens reunion and the friendly songwriting competition with fellow Go-Between Robert Forster. Before his unexpected death, McLennan and Forster assembled brief collections of their solo work that gives just enough evidence of their intelligent pop craftsmanship to encourage further research. True to their differing natures. McLennan assembled his chronologically, while Forster opted purely for flow. Of the two songwriters, McLennan was the natural tunesmith, a nuts-n-bolts, straight to the point and hook man, with songs crafted to their barest essentials. His “The Dark Side of Town” uses a delicate bed of guitars and keyboards to evoke an airy, cool evening of lost romance. “Haven’t I Been A Fool” is both self-deprecating and soundly confident. “Surround Me” shimmers with harmonies masking the lyrical unrest lurking just below the surface. “Malibu 69” simply haunts. McLennan was a songwriter of rare magnitude and worthy of greater contemplation.
