[Edit]A bright and lively 12-song set, the Grasshoppers' self-titled debut shows an evident love of bluegrass and exudes a traditional family feel. Hailing from the unlikely bluegrass state of Idaho, the four-piece band, consisting of a father (Glen Garrett on guitar), a son (Jeremy Garrett on fiddle), his wife (Honi Glenn on standup bass), and the son's longtime friend (Randy Glenn on banjo), sings wonderful harmonies with Honi and Jeremy sharing most of the lead vocal duties. All of the songs were written by the band and have a genuine homespun flavor, reminiscent of Alison Krauss and Union Station's first albums. "Hold on My Heart" and the leadoff track "River of Tears" are sung with authentic mountain anguish, and "Y2K" is a blissfully acoustic pickin' session despite its technologically advanced sounding title. Produced by Dan Tyminski, a mandolin player and songwriter (Alison Krauss, Lonesome River Band) who is well known in contemporary bluegrass circles, this album is an excellent start at what will doubtless be a long and productive career.
