Details
[Edit]Chicago-based Americana rockers Great Plains Gypsies owe more to the 70s sprawling rock operas of Thunderclap Newman and Todd Rundgren then they do to bluesman Blind Willie McTell (whom their press kit mentions at every turn). This is by no means a bad thing, since their piano-based roots rock is far more successful than 99 percent of the struggling bluesy bar bands out there. Their basic melodies and straightforward harmonies on "Backwoods Creek" and "She Knows" are augmented by lush production and honest emotion. Their genre-jumping album Ride the Blinds shows that the band shifts easily between AM rock to countrified boogie, goofy jug band stomps and acoustic blues, but their Neil Young meets NRBQ-style feel good rock stands out as being the most successful.
