While the explosive Seattle music scene was reveling in its loud, lumberjack renaissance of the 1990s, bands like the neo-psychedelic Green Pajamas, with their folksy updated '60s pop sensibilities, clashed with the angst-fueled clatter filling the airwaves of modern rock radio. Like fellow melodic heavyweights Trip Shakespeare and Jellyfish, the band composed artful, hook-filled confections that would eventually earn them an inevitable cult following. Through Glass Colored Roses: The Best of the Green Pajamas is a solid, 14-track retrospective focusing on the labyrinthine and lyrical vision of principal songwriter Jeff Kelly. Blistering alt-rock anthems like "Rattlesnake Kiss," featuring Joe Ross' signature fuzz bass, and "Death by Poisoning" merge seamlessly into more plaintive pieces like Laura Keller's heartbreaking suicide tale, "Downslide." The only misfire here is the inclusion of a lifeless re-recording of the band's first hit, "Kim the Waitress," an irritating and increasingly common addition to recent greatest-hits collections in every genre.
