While their earlier works covered more musical topography, Grin’s final album plays like a band coming into their own sound while retaining slivers of their musical influences. “You’re the Weight” opens with a boot-stomping strut and chunky rhythm guitar riffs rubbing against more fluid electric guitar leads played by Nils Lofgren and his brother Tom (who also provides some nice vocal harmonies here). Producer David Briggs gives 1973’s Gone Crazy the warmth of a Neil Young album without sounding derivative of Young’s sound — even on more country-tinged numbers like “Boy & Girl.” “Beggar's Day” was written as a eulogy to original Crazy Horse guitar player Danny Whitten and later covered by Nazareth on their 1975 hit album Hair of the Dog. “Ain’t For Free” closes with smoldering, end-of-the-party blues-rock.
