[Edit]Pianist Guido Manusardi has played with many American jazz stars in Europe, yet he is unjustly little-known elsewhere. For this 1995 studio session, he is accompanied by the powerful tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, bassist Dave Santoro and the impressive drummer Victor Lewis (a regular collaborator with Bobby Watson). Right from the start, Manusardi makes a good impression, both as an instrumentalist and a composer. His intense hard bop vehicle "I Will Be White Black" almost explodes with Bergonzi's smoldering solo, followed by a release that frees the leader to take off in a new direction. He gives it a Latin feel by adding a vamped introduction to "(There is No) Greater Love." The quartet's mastery of ballads is also apparent, including the standard "I Wish I Knew" and two lush takes of "Laura." Recommended.
