Hamish Imlach was one of the relatively unsung giants of the Scottish folk revival, a man equally at home with traditional music, political songs, the humorous — almost anything, in fact, although he was evidently surprised when the title cut of the compilation became one of his most popular songs. These two discs, containing material he recorded between the mid-60s and 1973, do him justice, especially as most of his albums have been out of print for years. Although many have seen him as a minor figure, he was a remarkably talented singer and guitarist. The songs are all over the place, but then, that was the way the man was, larger than life, and with a broad streak of humor and irreverence, with forays into country and blues — in other words, the repertoire of a '60s folk singer. Spread over two CDs, there's plenty here for fans, and ample material to give a strong introduction to someone who deserves to be reappraised.
