[Edit]During the medieval heyday of Islamic hegemony, Damascus held one of the great music schools (Cordoba being the other). Its Sufi brotherhoods have since preserved a tradition that incorporated Byzantine and Armenian Christian elements. Shakkur is one of the great Sufi vocalists. He performs two types of sacred suite that include instrumental sections for nay flute, qanun dulcimer and frame-drum. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, Rovi
