[Edit]Arranger Harry Arnold headed a notable big band in Sweden during the late 1950s that included such fine players as American trumpeter Benny Bailey, trombonist Ake Persson, altoist Arne Domnerus, pianist Bengt Hallberg and other lesser-known but talented jazzmen. Falling between swing and bop, Arnold's ensemble (which for a time welcomed guest arranger Quincy Jones) had an appealing sound and high musicianship. This 1994 CD from the Swedish Ancha label (all of the liner notes are in Swedish) features the ensemble on radio broadcasts from 1956 and 1960, which begin and end with short versions of Arnold's attractive theme "Stand By." The earlier date mostly sticks to swing standards, while the 1960 set includes renditions of Horace Silver's "Sister Sadie" and Ornette Coleman's recent "Ramblin'." In addition, there are four numbers from a swing sextet headed by clarinetist Putte Wickman. Recommended, but probably difficult to find.
