Une Histoire de Famille, Hart-Rouge's third release in the U.S. on Red House Records and ninth album overall, is a collection of largely traditional material largely sung in French. The musical style reflects the Western Canada home of group members Suzanne, Michelle, and Paul Campagne, a contemporary folk style dominated by the siblings' vocal harmonies. Those vocals are emotional and forceful, but also filled with surprising duos and trios that come and go, giving the music a haunting, ear-catching sound, particularly on such tracks as the quick-paced "Grain de Mil." Hart-Rouge often sound like a group of amateur singers in their vital, seemingly instinctive singing and playing, but they also have a professional polish that marks them as a contemporary folk act whose music can be moving even to those who struggle with the idiomatic French lyrics.
