Resounding guitar riffs and heroic drum lines are the order of the day on Hearts of Saints’ self-titled debut album. The Kentucky-bred Christian rock quartet (first known as Special D) favors galvanizing God-centered anthems, sung by Craig Felker with unstinting fervor. Sonically, Hearts of Saints owe much to U2 and Switchfoot, with a strong ‘80s influence (think Duran Duran and Big Country) present as well. Songs like “The Secret,” “Monster," and “Beautiful Mystery” blend restless, spiritually hungry lyrics with high-gloss, propulsive tracks. Rather than preach in general terms, Felker sings of his own need for redemption and forgiveness in the tough-yet-poppy “Nothing Else” and the jittery, new wave–esque “Breakdown.” The band’s ballads (“Emmanuel,” “Angels Light”) wrap themselves in acoustic piano and strings for a more contemplative ambiance. Among the standouts here is “Hello Grace,” an uplifting tune with a playful yet spiritually resonant message. If you’re looking for crowd-rousing testimony and energized confessions, there’s plenty to be found here.
