Details
[Edit]Pittsburgh-based Heather Kropf is a singer/songwriter of unaffected charm and intelligence. Her 2000 debut Sky contains a gallery of watercolor-toned songs riding upon supple piano-based rhythms. There are moments here that bring to mind Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan and For the Roses-period Joni Mitchell. But beyond such easy comparisons, Kropf’s writing style is teasingly personal, hinting at interior shadows and elusive moments of joy. Her breathy, precisely phrased vocals glide with jazzy flair on “Shine” and “Come Around” and take on a rueful edge during the title tune. She gets playful on the slinky “Minus the Mood” and engages in some sly character analysis on the folksy “Comet.” Tunes like “Luck On a Wing” are poetic ruminations set to evocative piano melodies. Best of all is the waltzing “Downtown,” at once a wistful love song and a tribute to her Pittsburgh home. Sky matches emotional honesty with an engaging musical sophistication — not a bad accomplishment for a first album.
