[Edit]Italian electro-goth duo Helalyn Flowers make their full-length debut with the derivative but nonetheless entertaining A Voluntary Coincidence. Not so much an album as a musical laundry list of what the male-female duo of Noemi (vocals) and Maxxx (instruments) like, A Voluntary Coincidence starts with an impressive homage to Björk's beat-heavy period ("Eye for a Day") complete with caterwauling vocals, then moves on through Daft Punk-style dance-rock ("My Girlfriend Insanity"), neo-disco, good old-fashioned beat-heavy house ("Voices"), synth pop in the style of Depeche Mode's first couple albums after Vince Clarke left ("A Sweet and Deep Bomb in My Heart"), industrial disco, dance club pop, IDM and a couple of sub-sub-genres whose names are known only to three people who live in Ibiza. There is not a hint of originality to be found within these songs. Heck, in the cover photo, Noemi even looks like a strung-out Amy Winehouse. But Helalyn Flowers attack their genre exercises with humility and verve, so it's a trashily entertaining listen regardless. [Alfa Matrix's 2008 edition included a bonus CD of remixes.]
