Details
[Edit]Henrik Johansen was a Danish clarinetist whose style ranged from George Lewis to a bit more swing-oriented. He died in 1992 at the age of 57, but fortunately led recording sessions of his own in 1955, 1956, 1963, 1973 and 1981. This sampler CD from the Danish Storyville label features Johansen from all five of those years, as well as work as a sideman with pianist Adrian Bentzon in 1954. Unfortunately, the liner notes are in Danish, but there is a complete discography included, and the music certainly communicates well. Among the sidemen heard are trombonist Arne Bue Jensen, cornetist Theis Eigil Jensen, trumpeter Al Fairweather (on "New Orleans Hop Scop Blues") and clarinetist Sandy Brown. The highlights include "Oriental Man," "Bimbo," "Wild Root" (which is actually fairly boppish), and "Lord, Lord, Lord You've Sure Been Good to Me."
