"I'm a noble man, I just don't know what's right," sings vocalist Peter Quirk on Hint Hint's debut full-length. It's a sentiment that sums up his ball-of-confusion viewpoint on Young Days, as he sneers about being lost, getting through winters, and birds flying toward the sky despite having their "legs snapped to pieces by some monster." The Seattle quintet is dreary to say the least, blending post-punk with a gothic atmosphere. Quirk can obviously be compared to Placebo's Brian Molko, though he's more tragic than romantic, with lyrics that regularly suggest death, war, and just overall disorientation. In "A Curse On You, Dear," for example, he proclaims that "we are just a dust adrift in the waves and we cannot adjust what we need." Along with the ghostly tones from the keyboards and guitar, Young Days will convince you that either we're all doomed or that Quirk has spent one too many days alone in the pouring rain.
