Trumpeter Greg Hopkins' second CD as leader for Summit is a meeting of five veterans, three of whom (guitarist Mick Goodrick, tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce, and bassist Jim Stinnett) are seasoned jazz educators; the final member of the group is drummer Gary Chaffee. Together they explore Hopkins' creative post-bop compositions. The opener, the title track, features a lively bossa nova rhythm that propels both Hopkins and Pierce through its tricky changes. The leader's warm-toned flügelhorn is showcased in his intricate ballad "Boon Moon" and lush "Waltz for Charlie." Pierce is the perfect foil for Hopkins and a brilliant soloist in his own right, especially in "Scooter," which seems to be inspired from a childlike chant that serves as the basis for the song. The one standard of the session is a straight-ahead arrangement of the swinging ballad "Here's to My Lady." Greg Hopkins is yet another example of the Summit label's desire to give greater exposure to deserving musicians, and this CD is well worth the investment.
