Details
[Edit]hitRECord is an online collaborative production company. Founded and spearheaded by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, hitRECord shares its profits with contributing artists—in this case, the 78 artists who contributed to the 15 songs on the company’s 2012 debut album, Move on the Sun. As you might expect, this sonic potluck is flavored with a little bit of everything. Yet amid a blend of indie, hip-hop, blues, electro, and jazz, Move on the Sun sounds remarkably cohesive, starting with title track, a breezy feel-good indie pop tune that’s as twee as the 2009 Gordon-Levitt film (500) Days of Summer. The following “Enjoy the Ride” is a simmering helping of retro soul and jazz that recalls the time in the early '90s when bands like The Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, and The James Taylor Quartet were fusing neo-soul with John Coltrane–inspired horns. “Downtown 81” tosses in throwback hip-hop that fans of De La Soul and Digable Planets will find both familiar and fresh. Regardless of genres, Move on the Sun is delightfully mellow from start to finish.
