Though it could be argued that one needs this Australian pop group's first two albums—Stoneage Romeos and Mars Needs Guitars!—before venturing further, this greatest-hits album of sorts does include several highlights from those releases ("My Girl," "I Want You Back," "Tojo," "Bittersweet") along with notable choices from every other studio album up through 2010's Purity of Essence. The addition of the new track "Use-By Date" proves that The Hoodoo Gurus still have plenty in the tank, while the early single "Leilani" stands as the "rarities" portion of the collection. This set is clearly the way for casual fans to experience the group's later albums, which are filled with great songs but likely only to appeal to hardcore fans of the band and of '60s-influenced power pop. That said, it's hard to argue with the sitar-to-Hendrix guitar of "Miss Freelove '69," the 12-string-guitar-fueled "When You Get to California," or the straightforward rock force of "Crackin' Up," which packs several great hooks into a single song.
