[Edit]The 1968 film Hour of the Wolf was the only full-on horror flick directed by Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. That piece of information, and the comic-book lettering and Latin-kitsch artwork of the front cover, are the first two big clues about the sound of the Hour of the Wolf's debut album. This Arizona quintet delivers in full on those preconceptions on Power of the Wolf, which is straight-up '80s-style hardcore deeply indebted to the Misfits on one side and the second-generation SST Records bands (from that mid-'80s period after the label had discovered Black Sabbath and weed) on the other. The SST connection is most keenly felt on the hidden cover of Black Flag's "Fix Me" at album's end, but the Misfits are pretty much all over this album, especially in mono-named singer Lance's guttural bark of a vocal style and horror-themed songs like "Black Blood Transfusion." The band's spiky, twin-guitar attack keeps things from turning into too much of an homage to their influences, and the rhythm section burns throughout. Solid old-school hardcore, then, for those who still think corporate rock sucks.
