Though Humble Pie never held onto its reputation like, say, The Allman Brothers or The Grateful Dead, the band rocked the Fillmore all the same and issued a classic double-live album that in 1971 was taken as seriously as Led Zeppelin and more seriously than Black Sabbath. Bands were built to jam in those days, and Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton worked up a lather worthy of the genre. Humble Pie entertained Fillmore crowds with two shows a night on May 28 and 29, 1971, with each audience getting a mild variation of the general set. The band had been decent on record, but it took a live album to bring out such elongated takes of “I Walk on Gilded Splinters,” “I’m Ready,” “I Don’t Need No Doctor," and “Rollin’ Stone.” It took another 42 years for these four shows to appear in their entirety in crisp, remastered audio. Now, Humble Pie fans can determine which takes they would’ve given final approval to for the live album.
