Details
[Edit]Splintering off from Oakland’s queer-themed, electro-based Gravy Train, frontman Hunx (a.k.a. Seth Bogart) teamed up with Nobunny’s Justin Champlin to co-write some tunes before assembling a band with East Bay Area garage-rock luminary Tina Lucchesi to form Hunx and His Punx. Gay Singles comprises the best of Bogart’s singles, seven-inches and EPs starting off with “U Don’t Like Rock n Roll.” One of the best recordings regarding rock since Joan Jett & The Blackhearts’ 1981 cover of Arrows’ “I Love Rock 'n Roll,” the song is an infectiously catchy slice of sloppy, poppy, garage punk in which Hunx hilariously lambastes a lover with lyrics like “What the hell is wrong with you/ I think you sniffed too much glue/ You don’t like rock ‘n’ roll and I don’t like you.” The similarly catchy “Gimmie Gimmie Back Your Love” leans hard on a grinding organ (a musical organ) and a bubblegum bounce that recalls the 1968 tune “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.” The tune was used in a 2010 LensCrafters commercial. “Teardrops On My Telephone” brilliantly flirts with ‘60s girl groups.
