Details
[Edit]As part of Norton Records' continued cheekiness, the label issued this digital-only release as an introductory collection for the iPod generation. As a label that's never stopped pressing vinyl, Norton has also remained true to its original aesthetic of presenting obscure, out-of-control, oddball rock 'n' roll, garage rock, and greasy R&B by mostly unknown artists; few of its acts would have rated a recording contract from a conventional record label when Norton opened for business in 1986. The 45 tracks here deserve to be heard. There are recognizable names like The Dictators, Ramones, The Sonics, Question Mark & The Mysterians, and Doug Sahm, plus Norton stars like Hasil Adkins, Andre Williams, Esquerita, Jack Starr, Roy Loney, and The A-Bones and great obscure tracks by the likes of Bunker Hill, Incredible Kings, and Screaming Joe Neal. The result is a wide-reaching collection of what's essentially an alternative history of rock 'n' roll: one where the loudest, craziest music gets its rightful due and no sanitized version (à la the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) need apply. The digital booklet is essential for higher learning.
