[Edit]Part 1 of Tamblyn's Four Coast Project, Superior: Spirit and Light deals with the area of Ontario around Lake Superior. It is thoroughly sublime for Tamblyn, ranging from the haunting folk of "Black Spruce" to the beautiful instrumental, "Slate Island Song." The music is incredibly evocative of the space it conjures and — as depicted in the liner notes — Tamblyn is remarkably successful in taking a song from a space where he wrote it and creating those images for his listener. This project takes Tamblyn in a new direction, incorporating his adventurous side as much as his role as folk icon. A stylized modern folk epic — and the first part of four similarly depictive adventure albums that take the listener to new spaces — physically and musically.
