Beautifully instrumented atmospheric noise rock from the icy netherworlds of Minnesota. Yellowston is an album that utilizes Moog, keyboards, theremin, samples, noises, loops, guitars, drums and the occasional vocals. With those instruments, they capture a swirling, laid-back sound akin to an experimental Sigur Ros or an even more droning Low. That being the case, most of the material on the album is lengthy, with many pieces over four minutes and the opener being almost 13 minutes long. All the songs are held together, however, and aren't just noise for the purpose of noise. Much of the material is relaxed and the vocal work is reminiscent of Low's Alan Sparhawk, which is understandable as he recorded this album for his label. Also of note is the splendid Joy Division cover song, ""Isolation" which is pulled off in an air of morose starkness, of which the British band would no doubt approve. This is a hidden little gem, a wonderful suggestion for fans of this genre and indie rockers burnt out on all the hard-driving guitar work in the scene.
