[Edit]Imbroco's impressive pedigree (Mineral, Pop Unknown, the Impossibles) is not wasted on the band's excellent debut Are You My Lionkiller? With a mature grasp on dynamics, texture, and melody, the group use simple ideas that are executed with utmost focus and conviction. Fugazi comes to mind during the crashing "Sixty Six Thousand Miles and Hour," which manages to push itself into higher layers of saturation and intensity as the song goes on, while the gentle moments of "October, November, Ohio" recall the flowery dissonance of Sonic Youth. Other moments have just enough oddball charm to invoke even Weezer, like the spirited "Northstar Is an Airplane." Like many emo core records, Are You My Lionkiller? is mixed with the vocals just low enough that the singer has to scream to get above the guitars; but, luckily, Imbroco's hooks come in the form of both melodies and riffs.
