[Edit]Judging solely from the Tool-esque album cover artwork, one might believe that the 2005 release by Immortal Dominion, Awakening: The Revelation, will resemble the art metal of Maynard Keenan and company. But immediately upon starting up the disc, you'll be in for a rude awakening, as this Colorado-based quartet specializes in extreme metal sounds. Buzz saw riffing, growled vocals, and high-speed tempos abound throughout the set, as evidenced by such delightful ditties as the album-opening "Punishment," "Eat Your Flesh," "Shallows in the Vatican Darkness," and "The Other Side of Pain." In an Immortal Dominion press release, guitarist Brian Villers stated that Awakening was "a soundtrack to one of the darkest periods we have ever been through as a band," while the back of the CD case states "fourteen songs of live, love, hate, and pain." Awakening proves that Immortal Dominion held nothing back.
