[Edit]Throughout the 1960s, the International Pop Orchestra produced pleasantly middle-of-the-road orchestral pop on a variety of themed records. Released on the Wyncote label, their holiday collection Christmas Favorites offers up 11 popular carols from the stable of Christmas classics. Richly recorded with an alarmingly present — and at times, over-compressed — tone, their arrangements of carols like "O Come All Ye Faithful," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "O Little Town of Bethlehem" are quite heavy-handed, with a severe, Wagnerian cast to them that seems almost mournful. Even the usually ebullient "Joy to the World" feels a bit more more austere than is typically heard. Still, Christmas Favorites does the job of delivering the expected melodies of the season, albeit with a bit more gusto and command.
