Shortly after lending vocals to the Scottish indie pop band Green Peppers, recording an album of Billie Holiday covers with outsider jazz pianist Bill Wells, and cutting some slow-burning Americana with Mark Lanegan, Belle & Sebastian’s Isobel Campbell unveiled Milkwhite Sheets. This album not only worships at the altar of bygone British folk; it adds to the genre’s canon of greats. Admittedly inspired by Anne Briggs, Jean Ritchie, and Shirley Collins, Campbell opens with a gorgeous rendition of the traditional tune “O Love Is Teasin’,” where a delicately picked nylon-strung acoustic guitar accompanies her wistful inflections. The centerpiece of Milkwhite Sheets is a cover of Paul Giovanni's “Willow’s Song.” Celluloid enthusiasts may recognize this tune from the 1973 film The Wicker Man. Campbell’s version is transcendent—using guitars, spare drums, banjo, and flute to birth gauzy, timeless tones under her ethereal vocals. Meanwhile, Campbell’s own enchanting “Thursday’s Child” sounds like a Brit-folk Claudine Longet.
