Kayla Cohen, a.k.a. Itasca, is an inspired folk guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who moved from her home base in New York state to Los Angeles in 2012. The new environment inspired her writings, lending a touch of Laurel Canyon to her already-established Brit-folk roots. The addition of flute on songs such as “The Hermit’s View,” “Dream of the Water Bearer,” and “After Dawn” provides a counterpoint to her beguiling melodies. Cohen is in no hurry, and like Mia Doi Todd, Meg Baird, and other serious contemporary female folk singers, she uses her sweet timbre and skilled fingerpicking to reach magical states of being.
