[Edit]Listening to Fortune Favors the Brave, the sophomore full-length from J.D. Overdrive (short for Jack Daniels Overdrive, which they had to change for legal reasons), it's easy to forget that the band isn't from the bayous of Louisiana, but instead hail from Poland. With a sweaty, beer- and sweat-soaked southern metal sound, J.D. Overdrive conjures the greasy styling of bands like Down and Black Label Society with an approach that's big on riffs and light on frills. A slight stylistic departure from the sound on their last album, 2011's Sex, Whiskey & Southern Blood, Fortune Favors the Brave finds the band tweaking the formula a bit with a slower, heavier sound. This change of pace allows J.D. Overdrive to really settle in and find the groove of the song, making the album an altogether bigger and heavier affair without necessarily sacrificing too much of the aggression of their debut. This change can really be felt on songs like "Call of the South" and "Standing Tall," where huge, lumbering guitar riffs shuffle their way through songs with a confident swagger. What's clear here is that this band has a real reverence for the style and the American bands that pioneered it, paying homage to them rather than just imitating them. And though J.D. Overdrive still aren't quite on the level of a band of seasoned vets like Down, Fortune Favors the Brave is an album that shows the band is certainly moving in the right direction.
